We all know how special it is to READ with a child. There is an amazing connection & discussions that occur around stories. Since Mother’s Day is just around the corner, I’ve put together a list of books that are great for that MOMMY + ME time! You can check them out at your local library, purchase them online or in most retail stores.
Let’s start with this classic…
“Are You My Mother?”
This story is about a little bird who hatches in his nest while his mother goes to find him food. He is determined to find her and decides to leave the nest, but runs into difficulties as he does not know what he looks like. A sweet and humorous story with a great message on the natural bond of mother and child.
“If I Could Keep You Little…”
This is a great board book. My daughter received this story when she was born in Spanish & and it is definitely a special one. It’s a heart warming story about the balance of letting your child grow up and wanting to hold on to those little moments forever. A perfect bedtime story as you cuddle your little one before kissing them goodnight.
“The Kissing Hand”
is another classic and one that is used in so many classrooms to teach the concept of reassurance, especially when you’re not with your parents.
This book is used by several kindergarten or pre-K teachers as they prepare their students for being away from their parents. This is a feel good story & one that I’m sure will leave you thinking “what a great idea” for next school year.
“Me & Mama”
portrays a black girl with curly pigtails & her family connections. A Caldecott and Coretta Scott honor book, and the perfect read for those with a special mother- daughter relationship.
This story is beautifully illustrated to depict a mother-daughter relationship and their lovely day together. The author’s poetic writing is detailed and shares the unconditional love between a parent & their child.
“Mama, Do You Love Me?”
This one is a Native American story that takes place in the Arctic, it is a story about a child who tests the limits of unconditional love their parents have, and who quickly realizes that this love surpasses all regardless of time or place. It’s also a great introduction into another culture and uses beautiful illustrations of Arctic animals such as wolves, whales and puffins.
These are just a few of the amazing collection of books that can be shared with all mothers on this special day or really any day! Reading is a crucial part of a child’s development, and one that starts in the womb. So, I encourage you to find any and every excuse to read together and to enjoy some good conversations centered around those fantastic stories.
Some good reminders when reading with kids are:
- Have picture walks, which means discussing the pictures and making predictions before they actually hear the text
- While reading, stop and ask questions and/or recap what you’ve been reading helping them with comprehension
- Play games with the pictures or texts to keep them entertained and interested.
For example: Ask them to find a specific character or animal on a page or a letter you give them a sound for. - Let them help you turn pages which helps them learn the format of written text (how we read from left to right), and the components of a book and how it’s bound by its spine, front and back cover.
- Lastly, do not forget to HAVE FUN & do it as often as possible. Introduce them to various styles of stories with different cultures, settings around the world, concepts of text, things they can relate to & informational text that will teach them facts about the world they live in too. In turn, they will learn to have a love for reading which will develop life long readers!
I’ll link a few other favorites below, including some to share with those special grandmas too!
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing women out there! May you have a blessed day surrounded by those you love most️
