Meet Nicole Cumberbatch, host of The Mamas Know Best, We Got Something to Say Podcast and founder of The Motherhood Village. She is a mother to her 4-year-old-son and is currently raising him and building her businesses in Coral Springs.

Tell us about your company.

I am a mother, podcast host, published author, speaker, and I have held several executive level positions during my 20-year career in Corporate. I currently own NGC Consulting, a boutique consulting firm for small business owners, and I serve on the Institute of Management Accountant’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) Advisory Committee.

Why did you decide to pivot your career and start your own business?

I have held several executive level positions during my 20-years in Corporate, but in February of 2021 I walked away. There wasn’t one particular instance that pushed me out, but the pandemic made the decision much easier for me. When the pandemic first hit, I was told “I was choosing my family over the company” because I asked for flexibility after my son’s school closed, and I constantly felt pressured to not take time off even though I had paid time off available. So, I walked away from my VP of Finance & HR position to start my own consulting firm. I wanted the flexibility that my previous employers would not give. I now support business owners, specifically in the startup phase, with developing efficient & effective accounting, administrative and human resources processes. I enjoy utilizing the experiences & knowledge I have gained, during my career, to help business owners not make the same mistakes I witnessed other business owners make. However, my true passion is supporting moms. I really struggled as a new mom, and I couldn’t imagine where I would be had I not had the village and resources I had to help me. I learned so much from talking to other mothers, and I wanted to share those stories so that another mother could feel understood, supported and not alone in their thoughts or their worries. Therefore, in Nov of 2019 I created the Mamas Know Best We Got Something to Say podcast.

How do you juggle running your company with spending time with your family?

Honestly, it’s still a work in progress. I try to give 100% to whatever task I am doing at the time and I try to be as present as possible when I am with my husband or my son. It’s not always that simple but I am mindful of it and try my best to make sure I spend time with my family as much as I can.

What has been the greatest challenge in your career?

Walking away from a six-figure salary due to a toxic work environment. I went from a VP position to an entry level position at my alma mater, Florida Atlantic University. It was an adjustment, but in hindsight, my family and I needed the change. Working at FAU allowed me to have more time with my newborn son, it alleviated the stress and anxiety I faced, and I was able to start my podcast.

What lessons have you learned in your career that you apply to parenting (or vice versa)?

Communication is key to any relationship and although my son is only 4, I am trying to set a foundation for when he gets older; therefore I give him respect and allow him to express himself when he’s upset, mad, frustrated, etc.

What do you hope to pass to your children about success and failure?

That every setback or failure is an opportunity to learn and grow, and that true success is not just about having material things, it’s about being happy, healthy and living your best life!

How has motherhood impacted you both personally and professionally?

Motherhood has changed me in more ways than I can count. He pushes me to be the best that I can be because I know he’s watching every move I make, and soaking up everything I say and do.
